Rafael Nadal who was once the best of the best was beating out of the Italian Open with a straight-sets quarter-final defeat to Stanislas Wawrinka .
Nadal, a seven-time champion in Rome, has now suffered five defeats on his favoured surface this season and heads to Roland Garros without a clay-court title for the first time since 2004.
The Spaniard wasted four set points in the opening tiebreaker before Wawrinka went on to win 7-6(7) 6-2...
He has won the French Open nine of the past 10 years but dropped out of the top five in the ATP rankings for the first time since 2005 last week after losing the Madrid Open final to Andy Murray, falling to No.7.
