Doing his official announce, he said:
"I'm willing to be part of the equation and therefore, I'm announcing my candidacy for president of the United States of America," Carson told CBS 12 in West Palm Beach, Fla., on Sunday.
"Many people have suggested to me that I should run for president, even though I'm not a politician," he added.
Carson is the fourth Republican to announce a 2016 presidential bid, following Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, Florida Sen. Marco Rubio and Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul.
Carson is expected to formally launch his campaign at an event Monday in Detroit, where he was born and raised by a single mother.
Carson, 63, has never held political office but is renowned for his work as the former head of pediatric neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore.
Carson, who now lives in Florida, became a favorite of conservatives after the National Prayer Breakfast in 2013, when he delivered a sharp critique of Obama care.
"You know Obama care is really I think the worst thing that has happened in this nation since slavery," Carson said at a Values Voter Summit that year.
