Though it's actually called 'Fight of the Century' because it's going to be one of the biggest fight ever and it's kicking off tomorrow Saturday, May 2, at 9 p.m. ET on pay-per-view through Showtime and HBO...
With the help of PEOPLE, here is the five things you need to know about the biggest fight...
Read below :
1. Both men are super-rich and super-revered
The veteran welterweight fighters are considered the two greatest boxers in the world. Mayweather, 38, is undefeated and the richest professional athlete in the world, even nicknaming himself "Money." The Michigan native comes from boxing lineage: His father once fought Sugar Ray Leonard. Pacquiao, 36, grew up in the Philippines and is a politician in his home country. Some believe he will make a run for the presidency.
2. They decided to fight after a chance meeting
For years, boxing fans have been dying to see these two duke it out, but various negotiations inevitably broke down. However, the pair made a breakthrough in January when they bumped into one another at a Miami Heat basketball game and had a private powwow afterwards, per ESPN. Mayweather announced plans for the fight a month later.
3. Even the loser walks (hobbles?) away with crazy cash
The fight's total purse (and yes, it's okay to snicker at the term) is expected to top $200 million, per CNN, with some estimates coming in at close to $400 million. Per the terms of the contract, Mayweather gets 60 percent of the pot and Pacquiao gets the rest. It's expected to be the biggest payday in the history of professional sports for both men.
4. Tickets sold out in a hot minute
With fighting fans finally seeing their dream-fight become a reality, tickets sold out in 60 seconds flat. However, with many of the tickets snapped up by ticket brokers, there are still seats available – at a very high price.
5. Celebrities are fighting too – for ringside seats
The competition for the best seats rivals what will happen in the ring. Ben Affleck, Matt Damon, Robert De Niro and Clint Eastwood all scored sweet seats to the fight. So did Michael J. Fox, Will Smith and Jimmy Kimmel, per the Los Angeles Times. Mark Wahlberg and Diddy – who bet a staggering $250,000 on the match-up – are expected to be there. So is Justin Bieber, a Mayweather fan who ran onstage during a pre-fight news conference, adding to the spectacle of it all.
